Smart yet introverted school-loner, Bart Willowbee, 11, is forced to leave his home in Brooklyn, New York, his favorite red bike and the comfortable and predictable life he knows, when his family suddenly moves to Oxfordshire, England to live in the estate of his eccentric grandfather’s, Sir Francis “Marwood” Whittingham — a celebrated Oxford professor of history-turned retired-recluse whom he’s never met.
One day, Bart stumbles upon a MAGIC BOOKCASE PORTAL in Marwood’s study which, upon entry, instantly catapults him back in time to 10,000 B.C. Suddenly he finds himself being chased by a herd of wooly mammoths and some angry cavemen. Marwood, dressed as a caveman, spots Bart and rescues him, just in the knick of time. However, now that Marwood’s top secret portal, passed down to him from his father, has been discovered, he strikes up a deal with Bart to secure his silence - Bart agrees to stay mum about the portal if Marwood lets him use it to learn and pass his history class. For if he doesn’t pass, he’ll be held back and forced to retake it over the summer at his new school, the dreaded Elmhurst Academy.
Now under the tutelage of Marwood, Bart, courageously maneuvers his way through the past, taking on different personas and challenges so he can learn about and experience, first-hand, important historical events. His first lesson being set in 1066 at The Battle Of Hastings where Bart will discover, via his reflection in a mirror, that he’s a young William the Conquerer whose being groomed to fight the most important battle in the history of England.
With each adventurous leap, Bart not only develops a newfound appreciation for history and his ancestors that went boldly before him but he’ll find a confidence in himself he never knew existed. All the while growing closer to Marwood and a loving family he always took for granted.
